How to Adjust Bicycle Shift Levers

Shifters on mountain bikes and road bikes require periodic adjustment to ensure effective and precise gear changes. Shift levers operate the front and rear derailleurs with cables that have a stranded steel inner wire. When you shift up or down by selecting a number on a shifter, the inner wire pulls or pushes the corresponding derailleur, moving the chain to another gear. Adjusting bicycle shift levers is a matter of indexing the tension of the cable inner wires.
