It's hard not to be intrigued when looking at the equipment in a Pilates fitness studio. These complicated contraptions are designed to work every muscle in the body, including some that you didn't know you had. While each Pilates machines has its own variety of benefits, some are more versatile than others. This versatility helps to prevent boredom and exercise burnout.
The Reformer
The Pilates Reformer is the most versatile piece of Pilates equipment. It works on a spring and cable system of resistance, and consists of a gliding carriage, a foot bar and postural alignment adjustment pads. Reformer exercises can be performed for all muscle groups in different body positions and ranges of motion. While it is often seen as the natural progression from the Pilates mat series, in some cases, the Reformer facilitates a more comfortable body position than the mat. A jump board can be added to the Reformer to add an aerobic element to the Pilates workout.
The Cadillac
The Pilates Cadillac is the most athletic piece of Pilates equipment. It is composed of a padded platform with a metal frame above it. A series of bars and straps are attached to the Cadillac frame. The machine was originally called the trapeze, because of the furry loops attached to the top of the frame. You can hook your arms through the loops and perform gymnastics-inspired exercises. The Pilates Cadillac is especially beneficial for athletes, dancers, and anyone who requires superhuman coordination.
Pilates Chair
The Pilates Chair is composed of a box that has on one side either a spring-controlled platform or a set of spring-controlled foot pedals. The pedals or platform are used for upper body and foot exercises. These exercises are particularly effective for anyone who has experienced foot, ankle or wrist injuries. The Pilates Chair can also be used for leg, abdominal and gluteal exercises.
