Vistaril is a brand name prescription medication containing hydroxyzine. Hydroxyzine is available as an oral tablet, capsule, syrup and suspension. It is also available for injection into the muscle. Doses of Vistaril commonly range from 10 mg to 100 mg. It may be given every four hours if needed. The FDA has approved hydroxyzine for several different uses, called indications. Physicians may prescribe it at their discretion for other reasons.
Nausea
According to Drugs.com, Vistaril is indicated for nausea and vomiting. The drug works by blocking a message to the emetic (vomiting) center in the brain. For this indication, it is usually given as an injection. It is often helpful for people who suffer from motion sickness and may be given orally ahead of time.
Itching
Vistaril halts a histamine response in the body that leads to itching. This itching is often related to an allergic response and may be accompanied by hives or a skin rash. Both oral and intramuscular administration is appropriate for this indication.
Anxiety
Hydroxyzine calms the central nervous system and it is indicated for both anxiety and tension. Specifically, it treats anxiety related to alcohol or drug withdrawal, delirium tremens (DTs) and asthma. It is also given for various anxiety disorders, short-term anxiety and anxiety related to an impending dental procedure. The drug is often prescribed for people found to be in a hysterical or severely disturbed state. Vistaril is given as an oral medication when feasible but as an injection in an emergency situation or when oral dosage is infeasible.
Sedation
The "2010 Lippincott's Nursing Drug Guide" explains that Vistaril is indicated for sedation in certain circumstances. It is often given as premedication prior to surgery. The drug may be given after surgery to decrease the amount of pain medication needed. When given prior to surgery, it may be administered orally or as an injection. After surgery, it is given as a shot. Hydroxyzine produces sedation by calming the central nervous system.
