Acne scars often result from severe acne. The Acne Resource Center Online states that about 20 million people in the United States suffer from severe enough acne to cause scaring. Unfortunately, it may take up to 12 months before a scar begins to diminish naturally, advises TheHealthGuide.org.
Baking Soda
Prior to applying any acne scar treatment, exfoliate your skin with baking soda. Mix 1 tsp. of baking soda in 2 tsp. of water and rub acne-affected areas with the exfoliating wash for one minute. Gently rinse the skin with lukewarm water. Exfoliating the skin sloughs off the dead skin, allowing the healthier skin underneath show, advises Dr. William M. Jaremko, a dermatologist practicing in Olean, NY.
Olive Oil
Rub 1 tbsp. of olive oil onto your scars. Dr. Jaremko advises that extra virgin olive oil has a mixture of monounsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants and a high acidity level, which allows it to produce good results. The moisture the olive oil adds to the skin helps soften the scars. By massaging olive oil into the scar, you increase the circulation, making it more likely for healthy skin to grow in its place, states Dr. Jaremko.
Vitamin C
The skin needs vitamin C to produce new, healthy cells, advices Dr. Jaremko. Increasing your vitamin C intake through supplements or by consuming citrus fruits may be beneficial. However, applying vitamin C directly to the skin may give you the best results. Fill a spray bottle with lemon juice and spray it on the pimple scars. Allow it to dry. Repeat three to five times. If the lemon juice burns your skin, rinse it off after five minutes. However, the best results may be produced if you can leave the juice on your skin overnight.
Cucumber and Tomato Mask
Tomatoes help prevent free radicals from damaging your skin, while the cucumbers help to soothe inflamed or irritated skin, advises Dr. Jaremko. When used as a mask, they may reduce the size of your pores and temporarily reduce the size of your pimple scars. To create a mask, blend one small tomato and one medium sized (6 inches) cucumber in the blender. Apply the mask and relax for 15 minutes. Rinse it off using cool water.
Water
Dr. Jaremko advises that every part of your body needs water, including your skin. Water will help remove toxins from your skin, plump your skin and help produce new, healthy skin cells; thus, reducing the appearance of scars. Keeping your skin hydrated requires the consumption of 64 to 80 oz. of water every day, advises Dr. Jaremko.
