Gout, a type of arthritis, develops when uric acid levels rise in the bloodstream (hyperuricemia). This happens because the body makes extra uric acid, if too many foods containing purines are consumed or due to life stress. Gout occurs in the toes, knees, wrists, fingers, elbows, ankles and heels, according to MedlinePlus. Gout is more common in men than women.

Pain

Pain in the big toe is an early sign of gout. When uric acid crystals buildup in the joint in the big toe it causes pain so intense it may awaken the gout sufferer from sleep, notes the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases.

Skin Warmth

Gout also causes a joint to feel warm. This early symptom of an increase in skin temperature over the joint is a sign that the body is reacting to an excess of uric acid.

Swelling

Swelling of a joint is an early symptom of gout. The joint is often so swollen that it severely impedes the use of the hand. Gout makes it difficult to perform daily life activities.

Red Color to Skin

The toe with gout will look red. This visible change in skin color is an early indicator that gout is developing.

Lumps

Skin lumps are also an early symptom of gout. When uric acid (tophi) clumps together to form deposits lumps will be visible under the skin. The lumps are often painful. Some people with gout cut the top off a shoe so it does not press upon the lumps on the toe with gout.

Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are another symptom of gout. They form from uric acid crystals. Kidney stones often cause intense pain because they block the flow of urine, notes the National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse. If the stone is large and cannot pass into the bladder the pain will be continuous. Kidney stones often result in fever and chills due to infection. A doctor must be notified immediately if this occurs.
