Particularly if you've grown up wearing crewnecks, pulling on a V-neck top suddenly feels like a vastly different experience. While the difference is simply a pointed notch of missing fabric, this neckline lends itself to a variety of new outfit options. Rather than shy away from the V-neck shirt, consider the ways in which this garment can expand your wardrobe by understanding some fundamental guidelines for making it work.

Step 1

Add leather to your look for an urban-inspired approach to styling around your V-neck. Pull on a black V-neck, short-sleeve T-shirt to begin. Add a pair of distressed, dark gray or black jeans with a close-fitting, straight-leg cut. Slide your feet into a pair of black-on-black, low-top Oxford-style sneakers or casual black driving moccasins. Top your look with a fitted, black leather jacket with a stand collar or moto styling.

Step 2

Combine your V-neck shirt with other classic separates. Pull on a V-neck sweater in a solid hue, such as Army green. Add a pair of deep gray or black twill cotton pants in a relaxed, straight-leg silhouette and slide your feet into low-profile sneakers. Pop on a pair of dark Wayfarer-style sunglasses and a leather-strap, round-face watch and your sleek-meets-casual look is complete.

Step 3

Dress up your V-neck by adding a sports coat to your ensemble; this is an easy way for a man to mix casual and polished dressing. Put on a medium gray, V-neck T-shirt with a pair of dark rinse jeans and brown ankle boots. Top the outfit with a navy blue wool or corduroy, double-breasted sports jacket. Dress it up a bit more by pulling on black V-neck sweater over a pale blue button-front shirt. Slide on a pair of black slacks and black Oxford-style dress shoes. Top the look with a gray tweed, single-breasted sports coat.

Step 4

Accessorize your V-neck shirt to accentuate the detailing of the top's neckline. Wear a casual outfit, such as a black or white cotton, V-neck, short-sleeve T-shirt with a pair of medium blue relaxed jeans and taupe or beige chukka boots. Fasten on an oxidized silver chain-and-pendant necklace just long enough to tuck beneath your shirt or reach for unstained wooden beads. These masculine pieces add a unique edge to your style.
