Lead poisoning is caused by an accumulation of lead in the body, even in small amounts. Large concentrations of lead in the body can be fatal. Lead-based paint and lead-contaminated dust are the primary causes of lead poisoning in children. However contaminated air, water, soil and even cosmetics can cause lead poisoning in adults. Being able to recognize symptoms can lead your doctor to testing for lead and providing proper treatment.

Pain Symptoms

Once lead is introduced into your system, it can travel to multiple parts of the body. Abdominal cramping is one of the most common pain symptoms and is usually a direct indicator of lead poisoning, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. You may also experience pain in your arms or legs. Some patients report having regular headaches as well.

Changes in Sensation

As symptoms progress, you may notice a change in muscle functioning or the sensations you feel in your muscles. Muscle weakness or muscle fatigue is common, according to the Mayo Clinic. Without treatment, or if you are continually being exposed to a source of lead poisoning, your symptoms may progress, causing numbness or tingling in your arms or legs. Should you experience any numbness, you should notify your doctor immediately.

Changes in Reproductive Functions

Male patients who have been diagnosed with lead poisoning have reported a decrease in their sperm count or an abnormal development of sperm. Female patients may be prone to miscarriage if attempting to get pregnant, or if they are already pregnant, they may experience premature labor.

Cognitive Symptoms

Lead poisoning can affect cognitive function. You may experience memory loss or difficulty concentrating or sleeping. Some patients experience frequent changes of mood, particularly with irritability or aggression, and some even develop a mood disorder.
