If you have developed a dry and itchy scalp, you are most likely suffering from either dermatitis or psoriasis. Due to the conditions, the area may appear inflamed and feel irritated. The skin can become dry and scaly, and can cause an itching sensation. Speak to your doctor if you have chronic occurrences of dry and itchy scalp.

Types

Contact dermatitis occurs when you are exposed to a product that you have an allergic reaction to, such as a shampoo or styling product. Sebhorreic dermatitis occurs when the scalp produces an excess amount of skin. Psoriasis is a chronic condition that leads to scaling and inflammation on the surface of the skin.

Solution

You can relieve itchiness and dryness by using a pH-balanced shampoo, according to "The Doctors Book of Home Remedies" featured on the Mother Nature website. The pH level should fall between 4.5 and 5.5 and you can test this with pH test strips. Scaling that could be causing the dryness and itchiness can be removed by applying a product called Baker's P&S Liquid at night and rinsing out the following morning. Smoothing on olive oil to the scalp can also give you relief.

Considerations

Medications can also help remedy a dry and itchy scalp. You can apply hydrocortisone cream twice a day to the scalp until symptoms go away. An antihistamine can help relieve scalp problems caused by allergies.

Prevention

The type of products that you use on your hair will have a lot to do with how successful you are at alleviating a dry and itchy scalp. Avoid any hair care products that contain alcohol, a common irritant. Never use soap to wash your hair. If symptoms occur after using a particular product, discontinue use to see if the problem clears up.

Warning

Keep in mind that an itchy scalp can also be caused by head lice infestation. They live off the blood in the scalp and lay eggs that become stuck to the hair. You'll need an over-the-counter topical solution that contains either permethrin or gamma benzene hexachloride to kill the head lice. Use a special comb to remove the eggs from the hair.
