Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a disorder where a blood clot develops in a vein, typically in the major veins in the leg and thigh. The clot often impedes blood flow in the artery. The clot also becomes more problematic if it gains mobility and flows through the artery to the heart, brain, lungs or other regions. There are a range of symptoms of deep vein thrombosis. Not all cases of this disorder display symptoms.
Red Color on Leg
A red color on one leg is a symptom of deep vein thrombosis. The color will appear in a localized area and will be consistently present. This symptom usually arises after a period of being sedentary. Deep vein thrombosis is linked to a lack of movement. All symptoms of deep vein thrombosis indicate a possibly fatal disorder is developing; contact a doctor immediately.
Warm Patch on Skin
Another sign of deep vein thrombosis is increased warmth in the skin on only one leg, notes MedlinePlus. The increase in temperature is localized to a specific area on one leg. The warm feeling will be consistent.
Pain and Tenderness
Pain and tenderness in one leg only is another symptom of deep vein thrombosis. The severe pain usually starts in the calf and feels like a "charley horse," notes the Mayo Clinic. The leg pain may only be apparent when standing upright or walking.
Swelling
Edema (swelling) in just one leg and the same foot and ankle are signs of deep vein thrombosis. Edema that indicates deep vein thrombosis may arise when you do not move around much during times like traveling on an airplane, driving in a car or recuperating after surgery.
Arm and Neck Pain
If the blood clot is created in the arms or neck, these areas have edema (swelling) and also pain. The swelling often arises suddenly and without a noticeable cause.
Increased Heart Rate
An accelerated heart beat and rapid breathing are additional symptoms of deep vein thrombosis, notes the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute. These symptoms also often cause a feeling of anxiety to arise.
Pulmonary Embolism
If a blood clot from deep vein thrombosis has moved into the lungs a pulmonary embolism is a potential problem. This symptom of deep vein thrombosis is life threatening. The symptoms include being lightheaded or fainting, bringing up blood while coughing, an urgent shortness of breath, and chest pain that deepens with coughing or with each breath.
