When the weather outside is frightful, the great indoors is so delightful. Akron, a city in northeastern Ohio, presents teenagers a wide variety of fun indoor places with stimulating activities to occupy their free time. Teenagers in Akron can indulge in the arts, bowl and find other entertaining activities to do, all in the weatherproof environment of the great indoors.

Bowling Alleys

Akron has quite a few bowling alleys which provide teens with the opportunity to bowl, snack and socialize. However, three seem especially well-suited for teenagers. Bill White Akron Lanes is an ideal place for teens to spend their summer and other weekday vacation mornings because of its Breakfast Bowl. Patrons get two hours of bowling plus scrambled egg, bacon or sausage, toast and coffee for breakfast. There are also Summertime Fun Specials for bowlers 18 and younger, which include discounts. Midway Lanes offers special events that help cost-conscious teenagers, such as Quarter Mania Madness, a time when hot dogs, soda and bowling rentals cost one quarter each. Eastgate Lanes features high school bowling and bills itself as “the proud home of The Ellet Orangemen” bowling team.

Indoor Action

Laser Quest Akron offers teens with a sense of adventure the opportunity to play laser tag. The facility features a multi-level area with special lighting, fog and thematic music to enhance the experience. G.S.F.E Cade is an indoor skating rink that gives teenagers the opportunity to hone their speed and skills on eight small wheels. The facility can be rented out for private parties, which some teens may wish to do for their birthdays.

Movie Theaters

Regal Entertainment Group has three movie theaters in Akron: Regal Independence Stadium 10, Regal Interstate Park Stadium 18 and Regal Montrose Movies Stadium 12. All three are modern, multi-screen movie theaters. Highland Theater and Linda Theatre are both discounted, one-screen movie theaters.

Museums

Akron Art Museum is a cultural treat for teenagers. Teenagers can take advantage of Akron Art Museum’s special student tours, which are 45 to 60 minutes in duration. The art museum has a collection of over 5,000 works of art, but can only display a small percentage of them at any given time in its galleries. Akron Art Museum offers teen studio classes, which provide tools and materials. Fossils and Science Center is a 4,500-square-foot museum geared toward families who believe in or are curious to learn about intelligent design. The facility features hands-on guided tours, fossils, science activities and exhibits.

The Arts

Weathervane Community Playhouse is a community theater that allows teenagers to truly immerse themselves in the theatrical arts. Its Mainstage Series Productions season presents as many as seven theatrical productions, and the Young Actor Series Productions season, which features youthful actors, showcases as many as three theatrical productions. In addition, Dietz Theater Productions, presented at the theater’s second stage, features as many as two plays. Teenagers ages 13 to 18 can take theater classes -- acting, costume making and other skills -- at the playhouse. Akrona Galleries is a full-service art gallery that sells local and international art. The facility offers art classes to teenagers and sometimes features high school student art in its gallery.
