Badminton is a racquetball game played by opposing individuals or opposing teams of two. Badminton is played with a lightweight racket and a shuttlecock, a unique, feathered-style projectile. Recently, badminton has gained popularity and has even become an Olympic sport.
Logistics
Badminton is played on a rectangular court with a hard, flat surface. The court is 13.4 meters long and 5.06 meters wide in singles Badminton and 5.9 meters wide in doubles. The lines marking the court should be colored white or should be easily distinguishable. The posts should be 1.55 meters high with the net stretched firmly and flush with the top of the posts. The shuttlecock should be made from natural or synthetic material. It must weigh 4.74 to 5.5 g, and the base must be 25 mm to 28 mm in diameter. The racket cannot exceed 680 mm in length or 230 mm in width.
Game Rules
Play begins with a serve, in which one player stands behind the service line and hits the ball over the net to their opponent, who is positioned diagonally from the server. Once the shuttlecock is in play, teams continue to hit it back and forth, known as a rally, until it is no longer in play or a team commits a fault. The team that wins the point serves for the next point.
Faults
Faults are basically errors made by a team. If a team commits a fault, the opposing team gains a point. There are a various number of faults that can be committed during a serve and while the game is in play. Faults during a serve include the shuttle hitting the net or the receiver's partner before it passes over the net. When in play, the shuttle cannot land out of bounds, pass through or under the net or touch the ceiling, walls or other object outside the boundaries. In addition, a team or player cannot hit the shuttle twice in succession. A player cannot touch or lean over or under the net.
Scoring
A badminton match consists of the best of three games. A team wins a game by being the first to score 21 points. If the score is tied 20-20, a team must win by two points or be the first to score 30 points. A team gains a point if the opposing team commits a fault or the shuttle lands within the opposing team's side of the court.
