The mouth is made up of a variety of muscles that help us chew, talk or even stick out our tongue. The mouth muscles incorporate the largest group of muscles of the face, according to Martini's Anatomy and Physiology. Many people forget to exercise the muscles of the face and neck for health and fitness. However, exercising here helps reduce signs of aging, sagging muscles and drooping skin caused by weak facial muscle tone. A variety of exercises that focus on the mouth area can help reduce the appearance and depth of nasolabial folds, drooping chins and wrinkles around the lips, leading to a more youthful, fresh appearance.
Jack LaLanne's Mouth Exercise
Fitness expert Jack LaLanne offers a great exercise for every muscle surrounding the mouth. Open the mouth as wide as you can, and then purse your lips, as if you're going to kiss someone. Repeat this exercise several times as fast as you can. It's not as easy as it sounds, and you'll more than likely feel the burn and pull in the chin, the upper lips and to the sides of the mouth with this one.
Pucker Twists
Purse the lips like you're planning to kiss something on the wall opposite. With the lips puckered, twist the lips from one side to the other. Repeat the move several times to each side without stopping. You'll feel the pull in the muscles surrounding the lips and the sides of the cheek.
Nasolabial Fold Exercise
Get rid of the deep creases along the side of the mouth, or prevent them before they appear, by placing your index fingers inside each corner of the mouth. You may want to do this one in the privacy of your own bathroom or when you're alone.
Gently pull outward with the index fingers and then try to bring your upper and lower lips together. Hold the contraction for a second and then relax. Repeat this exercise 5 to 10 times. You'll really feel the pull in all the area to the sides of the mouth and the upper lip and the front part of the jaw.
Making Os
Open the mouth into an "O" shape and then try to wrap your lips to the inside, covering your teeth as much as possible. Now, try to smile, while at the same time keeping the teeth covered with the lips. This is a very small move that will help exercise the muscles just above and below the lips.
Firm Lips and Mouth
Stick your thumb or index finger into your mouth, and then suck on it. While still sucking on it, try to gently pull it from your mouth to work the muscles around the lips, suggests Fitness Health Zone. Repeat this exercise 10 times for firm, lush lips and a smooth upper lip.
