According to MedTV, weight gain while on Zoloft is possible, although it only happens in a small number of people. For those affected, however, the weight gain can be significant and cause not only health issues but also worsen the depression cycle. If you're on Zoloft and need to lose weight, a few lifestyle adjustments can make all the difference.
Step 1
Talk to your doctor first to see if you can switch to a different antidepressant. While Zoloft and other SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) can cause weight gain, others (like bupropion, sold under the brand name Wellbutrin) can actually help you shed pounds. Discuss your options with your doctor, especially if the weight gain is considerable and you're at risk of diabetes or heart problems.
Step 2
Lower your consumption of highly processed foods, saturated fats and sugary treats. Instead, focus your diet on foods high in fiber but low in calories, such as fruits and vegetables, lentils and beans. Fiber fills you up, so you won't feel deprived and you won't be consuming lots of calories.
Step 3
Exercise to increase metabolism. One of the reasons you gain weight while on Zoloft is that the drug slows down your metabolism. Aim for four to five workouts a week (45 to 60 minutes each is best) and make sure you combine cardio and resistance training. Working with weights will increase your muscle mass, which in turn activates your metabolism.
Step 4
Drink lots of water. It will help you control appetite, which sometimes increases while on Zoloft. Seltzer water and vegetable juices are also good options. Avoid fruit juices, as they contain too much sugar and can lead to weight gain.
Step 5
Cut down alcohol from your diet. Not only is alcohol not recommended while you're taking Zoloft, but it also contains empty calories and lots of carbs, which can lead to weight gain.
