Texas is a huge state, filled with opportunities and activities for families to bond and flourish. There are many opinions as to what constitutes the best family cities, but certain cities rise above the rest. They may offer social amenities, low crime rates, sports facilities and cultural activities. Whatever the case, they are known as wonderful places to raise children or to begin a new family.
Round Rock, with a population of 100,000 residents, has much to offer its families. It boasts some of the highest quality of life aspects such as low property taxes, reasonable utility rates and low incidences of crime. A five-year Transportation Master Plan was begun in 2011 to improve traffic flow in the city. Sports enthusiasts will enjoy the Dell Diamond stadium and conference center. For shoppers, outlet malls and the main Ikea store are readily available for their convenience.
Denton, population approximately 120,000, is located between the Dallas/Fort Worth area and the Oklahoma border. It is a city of cultural and family activities, some of which are unique to the area. An example would be the Horse Country Tours where individuals can join local tour groups or embark on self-guided tours to the local horse farms. The small city is also filled with cultural venues such as museums including the Firefighters' Museum, the Denton County African American Museum, and the Hangar 10 exhibits. Jazz seems to be the music of choice with the April Arts and Jazz Festival a highlight of the year. For those families with older children, the city is home to the University of North Texas and Texas Woman's University.
For a family intent on having a wide selection of entertainment options, San Antonio may be the place. This sprawling city of approximately 1,400,000 residents is home to Six Flags of Fiesta Texas and Sea World. The downtown Riverwalk is a popular destination for locals with its restaurants, shopping and city activities such as the river barges, visits to the Alamo and local missions, and Mexican festivals. It is home to several well-known universities and colleges, including the University of the Incarnate Word, St. Mary's University, Trinity University and the University of Texas. Sporting events include NBA Spurs and WNBA Silver Stars basketball games and Missions minor league baseball games.
Midland, located at the midpoint between Dallas and El Paso, is a thriving community of more than 111,000 people. It features many family friendly venues such as McCormick Art Gallery, the Community Theatre, and the new Wagner Noel Performing Arts Center. Sports aficionados will enjoy attending the Midland Rockhound games, a Texas minor league baseball attraction, or the soccer games of the West Texas United Sockers.
