Soft skin is the result of good care, a proper diet and good genetics. While there isn't much you can do about the last one, you can work on improving the first two to dramatically change the look and feel of your skin quickly. If your skin is particularly dry or rough, don't skip a single day of treatment.

Step 1

Drink eight to 10 glasses of water a day, every day. Water hydrates skin and will keep it soft and supple. Other caffeine-free liquids, such as fruit and vegetable juices, will provide both hydration and vitamins for your skin.

Step 2

Eats lots of natural foods. Fruits and vegetables contain vitamins and minerals that will improve the health and look of your skin. If your diet is somewhat deficient in nutrients, consider taking a multivitamin daily.

Step 3

Switch to a scrubbing shower gel instead of using soap. Soap tends to dry the skin, while gels hydrate and soften. A shower scrub is even better, as it will clear your skin of dead cells and rough patches. Use a loofah or a cloth to rub your skin vigorously while taking a shower.

Step 4

Make your own scrub by putting 1 cup of sugar into a bowl and adding olive or coconut oil into it. Add the oil slowly and mix until it reaches a sticky but not runny consistency. The amount of oil will vary depending on whether you use white or brown sugar, so add a bit at a time to control the mix. Finish by adding a few drops of your favorite essential oil. Use the scrub at the beginning of your shower and rinse well before patting your skin dry.

Step 5

Apply lotion right after the shower, especially if you're showering with hot water, as this tends to dry the skin. Rich, thick lotions are best. Products that contain shea butter, olive oil or vitamin E are especially good for dry rough skin. Reapply cream once or twice a day if it remains dry. Look for a cream that contains alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), which will exfoliate the skin, get rid of dead cells and reveal new skin. While AHAs are common in face creams, they are more difficult to find in body lotions simply because of their cost.
