Large pores are a cause for concern among people of all ages and skin types. It is important to take care of them immediately or they can lead to acne, discolorations and scaring. A number of cures are available for large pores, including over-the-counter (OTC) medication, prescription medication and skin treatments.

Sodium Sulfacetamide

This topical antibiotic helps to kill bacteria and open clogged pores so that they can begin to heal and reduce in size. Typically, sodium sulfacetamide products also include sulfur, which may smell bad or have a gritty texture. This medication can be prescribed by a doctor or dermatologist.

Adapalene

Adapalene is a topical retinoid derived from Vitamin A. It works to unclog pores and prevent future breakouts, as well as possesses anti-inflammatory abilities. This medication may be prescribed by a dermatologist and should be used in conjunction with sun protection. Side effects may include dry skin and minor skin irritation.

Tazarotene

This is a synthetic retinoid that is available as a cream or gel to keep pores clear. It can only be prescribed by a dermatologist or a doctor. Side effects may include skin irritation and the medication should not be used by women who are pregnant, as it has produced birth defects on animals.

Topical Salicylic Acid

Topical salicylic acid prevents acne by unplugging and reducing pore size, minimizing swelling and redness and allowing the affected area to shrink. This type of medicine is available in various strengths, including numerous over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, such as wipes, creams, lotions, gels and ointments. Additionally, it may be available in a higher strength with a prescription.

Topical Tretinoin

Topical tretinoin treats acne by unclogging pores. It promotes peeling of the skin to regenerate new skin cell growth. Tretinoin is a prescription-strength medication and should be used daily at bedtime, or every two to three days, as prescribed by your doctor. Acne may get worse before getting better when using this medication. It is important to avoid exposure to sunlight and wear sunscreen, as tretinoin may make your skin sensitive to the sun.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is ideal for shrinking enlarged pores. It decreases the appearance of pores by loosening the dead skin cells and dirt that clogs pores. With this treatment, a hand-held device blows crystals onto the skin and gently abrades the skin's surface, removing the surface cells.

Laser Resurfacing

Laser resurfacing is another effective cure for large pores. A laser beam destroys the outer layer of skin, heating the underlying skin, causing new skin to form. This procedure tons and tightens the skin, causing pores to look smaller.
