A newborn's sleep pattern is usually erratic and does not follow a parent's schedule. Most babies' sleep schedules eventually even out as the nervous system develops and the need for frequent feedings diminishes. Unfortunately, this is not the case for all babies. Living with a baby that is having difficulty sleeping can be stressful for the entire family. Thankfully, there are many natural remedies that can be used at home to encourage better sleep habits.

Rituals

Experts at the Babycenter website suggest establishing a bedtime ritual as an effective sleep remedy. A baby as young as six weeks old can benefit from a consistent routine. When it is bedtime, a mother can perform several calming activities to get her baby ready for sleep. She can try reading books, giving a bubble bath, dressing her baby in pajamas, singing lullabies and giving good night hugs and kisses. Whatever routine a family chooses, it is important to remain consistent with it---this means on weekends too. Helping a baby understand that it is time for bed can encourage him to fall asleep easier and for longer lengths of time.

Pacify

A parent should allow a baby to pacify himself with the use of his thumb or even a pacifier. In fact, not only can a pacifier work as a sleep remedy, it is known to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome. The Babycenter website explains that a baby is born with the desire to suck. It soothes a baby and may enable him to relax and fall asleep on his own. Although pacifiers are helpful, a baby's own thumb or fingers may be more beneficial. This is because a baby may not wake up crying in the middle of the night because of a lost pacifier.

Environment

According to the AskDrSears website, a relaxing environment can be an effective sleep remedy. A parent should keep the nursery quiet, free from any sudden noises that can cause a baby to jolt awake. Quiet music can be played if it relaxes a baby. Or she may enjoy white noise like the sounds of the air conditioner or a fan. There are even CDs that play sounds of the womb, ocean, rain, washing machine or vacuum cleaner. In addition, the bedroom should be dark with the windows concealed with a curtain. Curtains can help block out sun or street lights, urging a baby to sleep longer in the morning.

Hands On

The AskDrSears website recommends nestling and rocking your baby to help him fall asleep. Try placing the top of baby's head directly below your chin so that the vibration from your voice helps to lull him to sleep. A mother can chose to breastfeed or bottle feed as she rocks, making the transition to a warm crib a little easier. To resettle a baby who has woken up in the middle of the night, try firmly laying your hands on him. Gently pat his back or bottom to match the rhythm of your heartbeat. Slowly remove hands one at a time when he has fallen back to sleep.
