Goalkeeper
The goalkeeper is not mentioned in formation titles because goalkeepers are the one constant in soccer. There will always be a goalkeeper and their role remains the same regardless of the formation a team chooses to play. The goalkeeper is responsible for keeping the opposing team from scoring by stopping the ball from going in the net. They are the only player allowed to use their hands, as long as they remain inside the penalty area.
Defenders
The 4-5-1 formation employs four defenders. They defenders' job is to mark the opposing team's offensive players and prevent them from scoring. The four defenders can line up in different formations themselves. Commonly, the defenders will position themselves in a straight line across the field with two central defenders and one on each wing. Occasionally, teams will put their defenders in a diamond formation with one central defender lined up in front of the other.
Midfielders
Midfield is the position most commonly altered from team to team. Additionally, there are usually more midfielders than any other position of the field. This is due to the offensive and defensive responsibilities of midfielders. Midfielders must help defend in their half of the field and help attack in their opponent's side of the field. For this reason, midfielders usually have slightly different roles. In the 4-5-1 formation, there is usually a central defender who plays behind the other midfielders and plays more of a defensive role. In addition, the right and left midfielders can be employed and wingers and play more of an offensive role.
Forward
The 4-5-1 formation only has one forward, who usually plays in the center of the field. It is because of the lone forward, and that most players are behind the ball, that this is considered a defensive formation. The midfielders have to move forward and help the forward in order to be effective offensively.
