How Healthy Is President Obama's Go-To Snack?

For a nighttime energy fix, President Barack Obama bypasses caffeine in favor of almonds. Seven, to be exact, The New York Times revealed in an article about the president's night moves over the holiday weekend.

Almonds, as we know, pack an energy punch, which a busy POTUS surely appreciates. Along with containing more fat, they also contain more protein and fiber per serving than other tree nuts. High in calcium, almonds help you live longer since incorporating them into your diet can assist with weight management, heart health and even diabetes prevention.

So how healthy is Obama's go-to snack?

A high-protein snack is great for energy and focus (i.e., great for being the leader of the free world). Yet, as we recently wrote, snacking isn't always the best way to lose or maintain weight. In fact, a study has shown that nighttime snacking has an adverse effect on fat burning.

It's all about what you're snacking on and how often, writes registered dietician Chris Mohr. In fact, he recommends snacking on unshelled pistachios above all other nuts, partly because having to shell them slows down consumption.

But Obama is making a smart choice by limiting his intake at seven nuts. According to the USDA National Nutrient Database, one almond holds seven calories, so with his seven-almond snack, he's consuming 49 calories, 1.75 grams of protein, 4.2 grams fat and 1.82 grams carbs. By comparison, one medium banana holds 105 calories, 1.29 grams protein, .39 grams fat and about 27 grams carbs.

Plus, the magnesium in almonds can be beneficial to winding down and getting ready to turn in for the night. We give this high-protein and high-fiber evening snack a thumbs up!
