If You Love Coconut Oil, Try These 5 Other Beauty Oils

These days, pretty much everyone and their mom is obsessed with slathering coconut oil on their face and body. And while the stuff can work wonders as a moisturizer or makeup remover, it’s far from the only thing that can deliver a healthy, youthful glow without a side of weird chemicals or additives.

In fact, depending on your needs and skin type, there might be another oil that works even better than almighty coconut. (Yes, really!) Here are five other options to consider adding to your natural beauty regimen.

1. Jojoba Oil

Best for: Makeup remover, especially for oily skin

Why it works: Lightweight jojoba oil, which is derived from the seed of the shrub-like jojoba plant, has a waxy texture that makes it good at penetrating dirt and dissolving oily deposits on your skin. “This is why some people use it as a makeup remover, especially if you have acne or other conditions associated with congested skin,” says Brenda Brock, founder and formulator of the herbal skincare line Farmaesthetics.

How to use it: Place a few drops of jojoba oil on your fingertips and gently massage the oil into your skin to break up makeup and dirt, Brock says. Use a warm, wet cotton cloth to wipe away the excess oil and debris.

2. Grapeseed Oil

Best for: Moisturizing oily or acne-prone skin

Why it works: Yup, you can totally use oil on oily skin. Just opt for a lighter choice that absorbs easily, like grapeseed oil. (Heavier oils will only leave you feeling greasy, Brock says.) Another benefit? Grapeseed oil boasts soothing anti-inflammatory properties, which can help fight and protect against breakouts, says Whitney Bowe, MD, FAAD, assistant medical director of laser and cosmetic services at Advanced Dermatology, P.C.

How to use it: Place just a few drops of grapeseed oil onto your fingertips and gently massage onto your face and neck, says Brock. When it comes to oils — particularly if your skin is already on the oily side — a little bit goes a long way.

3. Olive Oil

Best for: Moisturizing dry skin

Why it works: Parched, tight, itchy or cracked skin needs a heavy-duty oil — and this thick, luxurious one fits the bill. “Olive oil is antioxidant-rich, which makes it ideal for people with dry skin and eczema,” says Bowe.

How to use it: Massage a few drops of olive oil onto very dry facial skin, on dry hands or cracked nails, or on rough patches of skin on your body, like your knees or elbows. It even works as foot soother. “Warming the olive oil in a shallow pan and soaking rough, tired feet for a few minutes will revive them and make them sandal-ready,” Brock says.

4. Argan Oil

Best for: Moisturizing mature skin

Why it works: Sadly, there’s no evidence showing that oils can actually reverse the sands of time when it comes to skin. But argan oil delivers much-needed hydration to help minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, along with vitamin E and essential fatty acids to nourish older skin skin, Bowe says. “It’s also known for its high concentration of antioxidants, and antioxidants can help protect skin’s elasticity,” says Brock.

How to use it: Place a few drops of argan oil onto your fingertips and gently massage onto your face and neck.

5. Sweet Almond Oil

Best for: A body moisturizer and exfoliator

Why it works: Thanks to high absorbability (no greasiness here!) and nutrients that help boost skin’s texture, tone and elasticity, sweet almond oil is ideal for using all over your body. It boosts skin’s glow by fighting dullness and ashiness, too. “The oil is absorbed by the fatty cells of the skin. The moisture in the oil is the used by the tissues to repair damaged cells and give your skin a more youthful look,” Bowe says.

How to use it: Slather on sweet almond oil after stepping out of the bath or shower, like a moisturizer. (Your skin absorbs more oil when it’s still damp.) Start with a few drops — remember, a small amount goes a long way! — and apply more as needed.
