“Beverly Hills, 90210” star and inspirational #cancerslayer Shannen Doherty has found one more way to make the world a better place while she continues with her fierce battle against cancer — standing up for mistreated animals.
On Saturday night, just a couple of weeks after finishing her well-documented chemotherapy and radiation treatments, ShanDo hosted the Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation’s first annual Gratitude Gala.
ShanDo told E! that she volunteered for the foundation “scrubbing dogs” and explained that she “gets inspiration from everything in this world,” including helping those in need. Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation founder Marc Ching told E! how Doherty inspires him and others: “Her journey is amazing, and it gives me strength when I don’t have strength.”
A longtime dog lover and animal-rights activist, ShanDo revealed that her German shepherd Bowie was the first to detect her breast cancer back in 2015. “My baby, she cuddles with me, she knows when I’m sick, she knows when I’m depressed, everything,” ShanDo said in an interview with E!
It’s no surprise, then, that the actress agreed to host the benefit, which aims to raise money for the Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation. One of the foundation’s primary goals is to stop the “brutal practice” of slaughtering dogs for meat in Asia.
“I have to get better because I want to go on this journey with [Marc Ching], and I want to help this man educate and shut down the meat market,” Doherty told E!. “I want to be a part of his life and his wife’s life. What they do is so beautiful.”
It looks like there’s no stopping social media’s most outspoken #cancerslayer.
