An O-positive diet is a dietary regime specific for a person with the O-positive blood type. Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo provides scientific and anthropological research on the development of the different blood types and their relationship to food. People with O-positive blood benefit in general from diets that are high in protein and low in carbohydrates, according to D'Adamo.
Meats and Protein
People with O-positive blood benefit from eating beef, buffalo, heart, lamb, liver, mutton, veal and venison, according to D'Adamo's research. Beneficial seafood includes bluefish, cod, hake, halibut, herring, pike, rainbow trout, red snapper, salmon, sardine, sole, striped bass and whitefish. Eggs and dairy products are not recommended for the O-positive blood type, although small amounts of butter, feta, goat cheese, mozzarella and dairy substitutes such as soy milk are admissible. Serving sizes of meat should be 4 to 6 oz. for men and 2 to 5 oz. for women.
Oils and Nuts
Small portions of oils, nuts and seeds are acceptable for O-positive blood types. Flaxseed, olive oil, walnuts and pumpkins seeds are considered highly beneficial. Neutral options for this blood type are canola, cod liver and sesame oil along with whole nuts or nut butters made from almonds, chestnuts, pecans, sesame seeds and sunflower seeds. Oil and nut butter servings are suggested at 1 tbsp., while nuts and seeds are recommended at 6 to 8 per serving.
Grains
The O-positive diet advises against wheat products. Dr. D'Adamo recommends a limited amount of grains in the diet with a preference for sprouted grain breads. Moderate amounts of gluten-free breads, rye crisps and rice cakes are also acceptable. The recommended portion size is 1 cup of dry grain or a single cracker or slice of bread.
Beans and Legumes
Individuals with the O-positive blood type should eat beans and legumes only as side dishes or in moderation. The specific beneficial types are adzuki beans, pinto beans and black-eyed peas. D'Adamo indicates that beans can interfere with the digestion of other proteins such as meat and are not beneficial for this blood type.
Vegetables
The O-positive blood type benefits greatly from leafy green vegetables such as kale, collard greens, spinach, broccoli and romaine lettuce, suggests D'Adamo. Peppers, onions, sweet potatoes and artichokes are also good choices. The recommended portion size per serving is 1 cup, regardless of how the vegetable is prepared.
Fruits and Juices
Dark red and purple fruits such as plums, prunes and figs are highly beneficial for this blood type, per D'Adamo's diet. Other neutral fruits are bananas, blueberries, apricots, peaches, papayas and pears. Melons and coconut products should be avoided. Three to four servings of fruits are recommended daily. Vegetable juices are recommended for O-positive blood types over fruit juices. However, pineapple and black cherry juices are considered beneficial.
Spices, Condiments and Beverages
The O-positive blood type is invigorated by spices such as cayenne, turmeric, curry and parsley. Vinegars are aggravating, but mustard, apple butter and Worcestershire sauce are acceptable condiments. Beverages such as water, seltzer water and ginger or peppermint teas support the O-positive blood type's digestive needs, notes D'Adamo.
