Although a slow and steady jogging pace can give you a good workout, you may want to learn how to increase your speed. The faster you jog, the more calories you will burn per mile. Training to jog faster also improves your endurance, an important consideration if you are a competitive athlete. Keep pushing yourself each week by setting new training goals in order to jog as fast as possible.

Step 1

Run an average of 20 miles or more per week. According to the Military.com website, runners should establish a routine of jogging 20 to 25 miles per week before they try to increase their speed.

Step 2

Create obstacles during your jogs. By creating challenges for yourself while jogging, you can improve endurance to help you achieve a quicker pace. Jog up hills and run up steps if you come across them on your routes.

Step 3

Add bursts of speed while doing your normal run. Instead of doing your normal pace, every five minutes you should run as fast as possible for a solid minute. After a minute has passed, return to your normal pace. Repeat this process throughout your run as a way to increase your speed.

Step 4

Participate in interval training as a way to jog faster. An interval training workout incorporates a warm up, a period of intense aerobic activity and a cool down phase. Military.com suggests doing intervals if you want to run faster. A sample session might include a 1-mile warmup jog at your normal pace, a 1/4-mile jog at 10 to 20 percent faster than your normal pace, and then a 1-mile cool down jog.
