Acne is a disorder of the hair follicles and the sebaceous glands. The sebaceous glands produce an oil known as sebum, which is carried to the surface of the skin through the hair follicles. The sebaceous glands are especially active during adolescence, and the excess sebum can clog the hair follicles. This can cause the follicles to erupt into the inflamed pustules characteristic of acne. You can use common substances that you may have in your kitchen to treat acne, such as lemon juice, oatmeal and aloe vera.
Step 1
Wash your face. To keep your skin free of oil, makeup and other debris, wash your face twice a day with a mild soap and rinse it off thoroughly with warm water. You may need to wash more frequently if you exercise, but excessive washing can dry out your skin. Also, avoid touching your acne any more than necessary.
Step 2
Apply lemon juice directly to your skin. Dilute the juice from one lemon with a cup of water and soak a washcloth in the solution. Hold the washcloth to your acne for a few minutes each day. The citric acid in the lemon juice can remove the dead skin cells on the surface of your skin, which can help keep your pores open.
Step 3
Use an oatmeal mask on your acne. Make oatmeal according to the instructions and apply it to your skin after it has cooled down. Allow the oatmeal mask to dry and remove it with soap and water. The oatmeal mask can help keep your pores open and reduce acne outbreaks. Be careful to keep the oatmeal from going down a sink or bathtub drain, as this can clog the plumbing pipes.
Step 4
Put aloe vera on your acne. Remove a leaf from an aloe vera plant and slice it lengthwise with a knife. Squeeze out as much of the gel as possible without getting any of the leaf in the gel. Apply the gel to your skin to reduce the irritation and inflammation of acne.
