Mayonnaise is an excellent conditioning substance for your hair. It is cheap and can be purchased from any supermarket, or you can also make your own. Mayo can be used to treat dry hair and give hair a great sheen, and can be used as part of your regular hair care regimen.

Benefits

Mayo contains a combination of vinegar, oil and eggs that adds nourishing ingredients like protein to your hair. The mayonnaise can lock the cuticle layer of the hair and leave a protective coating behind after application.

Make Your Own

To make your own mayonnaise conditioner, combine 2 tsp. of lemon juice, 1 egg, 1 tsp. of honey and ¼ cup of olive oil. Beat the egg, honey and lemon juice until well-blended. Heat until the mixture reaches a creamy texture. Remove from heat and slowly add the oil. Refrigerate overnight. To add a pleasant scent, add a couple of drops of an essential oil, like rosemary or lavender.

Treatments

According to the Doctors Book of Home Remedies on the Mother Nature website, mayo can be left on hair anywhere from five minutes to an hour, then hair should be shampooed normally. Alternatively, you can place the mayo on your hair and cover with a shower cap. Sit under a hair dryer for approximately half an hour to allow the mayo to set.

Application

Work the mayo from your hair's roots to its tips. To keep your hair well-nourished, repeat applications weekly. Mayo can replace any deep-conditioning hair care products you use.

Warning

Do not use mayo if you have oily hair. Mayo can weigh the hair down and give oily hair an even greasier look.
