Bloating is a naturally occurring symptom when the body retains water. Bloating is the most common symptom of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), but it can also be a symptom of other illnesses or conditions. Bloating is a mild condition, even though it is uncomfortable or irritating. However, there are natural steps you can take to reduce the amount of water your body is retaining.

Engaging in Physical Activity

Although you may not feel up to it, engaging in physical activity can actually help your bloating. Moderate physical activity and exercise help you to sweat, releasing the extra water that your body is holding onto. Keep yourself adequately hydrated by drinking water. This helps your body flush out any toxins or extra fluids when you urinate.

Limit Solutions that Attract Water

It is important that you limit your intake of salt, because it can contribute to dehydration, causing your body to retain water in an effort to rehydrate itself. Avoiding caffeine and alcohol also helps to reduce bloating, because they, too, can contribute to dehydration.

Take Vitamin Supplements

The Mayo Clinic suggests taking vitamin supplements, such as calcium and magnesium. Taking 1,200 mg of calcium per day can help to relieve PMS symptoms, including bloating. Additionally, taking 200 to 400 mg of magnesium helps to reduce bloating. However, the Mayo Clinic advises against taking an additional supplement of magnesium for those with heart or kidney disease.

Take Over-the-Counter Medications

Some sufferers have achieved relief from bloating by taking over-the-counter PMS medications, such as Midol or Pamprin.
