1. Detoxify
If the victim has ingested enough juniper shrub to cause poisoning, it needs to get out of his body as quickly as possible. Clear his mouth of any plant matter, including juice extracts, leaves and bark. If he absorbed the juniper within 3 or 4 hours, you can have him throw it up by sticking your finger down his throat or giving him ipecac syrup. You should only induce vomiting if the victim is conscious; make sure his mouth and nose are clear, and keep him sitting up so that he doesn't choke.
2. Use Activated Charcoal
Activated charcoal is best used after vomiting has stopped or in cases where the juniper shrub poison has passed through the stomach and into the intestines. The charcoal bonds with the poison and keeps the body from absorbing further doses. The juniper plant then passes harmlessly out of the body with other waste products. You usually mix activated charcoal into a slurry with water and have the victim swallow it if she can.
3. Take the Plant to the Hospital With You
You should always call a poison center in the case of juniper shrub poisoning. They can determine whether you can treat the poisoning at home or if you need to go to the emergency room. If you do need to seek treatment, take samples of the juniper shrub with you. Not only will it help the doctors identify the cause of the poisoning, but it may also point to alternative causes, such as pesticides that may be on the plant.
4. Drink Lots of Water
Nausea and diarrhea are common symptoms of plant poisoning. You need to replenish the water in the body or the victim may suffer from dehydration. Have him drink as much water as he can, especially after the vomiting ceases. Use small, frequent sips instead of big swallows. If he can't keep the water down or has trouble swallowing, use small ice cubes in his mouth.
