Acai Berry Extract Nutrition Information

Grown and harvested in the Amazon rainforest, the Acai berry is a small purple berry similar in size to a grape. Once the acai berry is picked it becomes perishable within hours, which makes it difficult to transport. The berry is processed and sold in the form of capsules, powder and frozen pulp. While some nutritional value is lost in this process, acai berry extract offers an array of health benefits.

Antioxidants

Acai berry extract is high in antioxidants, which help keep disease-causing free radicals from forming in the body. A 2006 University of Florida study showed that the berry has the potential to kill cancer cells.

Phytosterols

The acai berry contains phytosterols, which inhibit cholesterol absorption. Phytosterol intake can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, according to the Linus Pauling Institute.

Essential Minerals

Calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and zinc are essential minerals found in the acai berry in dense amounts.

Fiber

The acai berry contains a much higher fiber content than other nutrient-dense berries, such as the goji and blueberry.

Other Benefits

Manufacturers of acai berry state that it can aid in weight loss and increase energy. According to the Mayo Clinic, these claims have not been well-researched.
