Football equipment or gear is needed by all football players to safely play this hard-hitting and violent game. This equipment is specifically designed to help players absorb hard hits from opponents. Equipment has changed dramatically through the generations from the soft leather helmets that were worn during the game's infancy to the hard plastic shells that are worn today.
Helmets
The helmet is the most prominent piece of football gear worn by all players. It is a scientifically engineered piece of equipment that is designed to protect the head from absorbing concussive blows. Although the rules of the game prevent tacklers from hitting their opponents in the head, the process of falling to the ground after absorbing a big hit makes helmet protection necessary.
Shoulder Pads
Shoulder pads help protect the player's upper body from big hits and also help football players deliver stunning blows when running or tackling. A powerful fullback cannot run through the interior of the offensive line if he does not initiate contact with those who are attempting to tackle him. Players are taught to tackle by getting their shoulder across the midsection of the ball carrier. The shoulder pad protects the player's vulnerable shoulder from this heavy workload.
Upper Leg Pads
Players wear protective pads across their upper legs. These pads slip into sleeves in the football pants and are very easy to put in and take out. Tacklers often hit ball carries in the upper legs, and these plastic-shelled pads (foam on the underside) keep the legs from absorbing too many heavy blows. Many players who have had knee problems also wear knee pads or braces for extra protection.
Football Shoes
Football shoes have cleats that help a player grip the field without slipping. The cleats are made of plastic or hard rubber and are usually cone-shaped. If a team is playing a game on artificial turf, players will wear ripple-soled shoes in order to gain traction while playing the game.
Football Uniform
The shirt is made of a lightweight material and should allow players the range of movement they need to throw, catch and run with the football. The pants are made of padded nylon to help players absorb hits. The material also wicks perspiration and moisture away from the body to help keep the skin dry and cool. Players who are comfortable will have a better chance of playing their best when the game is on the line.
