A number of things can cause dark circles under the eyes, from fatigue and stress to allergies and nasal congestion. Dark circles are hereditary and might be more prominent on aging skin, since skin thins and reveals the veins underneath. Determining the cause is essential to treating the circles, since some cases might require medical help.

Step 1

Rest your eyes appropriately. Get seven to nine hours of sleep every night. If you work with computers or papers all day, take small breaks to avoid eye strain. Every 30 minutes or so, close your eyes and cover them with your palms. The darkness and warmth will help you relax

Step 2

Mix equal parts tomato and lemon juice and apply to the circles using a cotton pad. Make sure you squeeze extra juice from the pad to prevent it from running and getting into your eyes. Pat the solution on your skin twice a day and let it air dry before applying makeup or creams.

Step 3

Apply vitamin E or almond oil to the area. Use just a small layer and then pat (don't rub) until absorbed. You can gently massage the area using two fingers, without pressing too hard or pulling the skin.

Step 4

Eliminate allergens. Allergies to anything from food to drugs to pollen can lead to congestion and to liquid pooling under the eyes, causing dark circles to be more noticeable. If you suffer from allergies, treat them appropriately, or talk to your doctor about being tested for allergic reactions.

Step 5

Refrigerate two used tea bags until cool. Squeeze any excess water from them and apply over your closed eyes. The tea will reduce inflammation and puffiness, as well as lighten dark circles over time.

Step 6

Talk to your doctor about laser therapy. If dark circles don't disappear with home treatments, you might need something more aggressive. Laser treatments can lighten under-eye circles and also will stimulate the creation of more collagen, which in turn gives way to younger-looking, more even-toned skin.
