Gabapentin is a medication used for the treatment of seizures in epilepsy. Gabapentin is also used to relieve the pain of postherpetic neuralgia, reports Medline Plus. It belongs to a classification of drugs called anticonvulsants. You should never stop taking this medication suddenly. Doing so may cause increased seizure activity which may be dangerous. There are some side effects of Gabapentin that you should be aware of.
Headache and Dizziness
You may experience headache and dizziness while taking Gabapentin. You may also feel drowsy and weak. Use caution while driving or operating hazardous machinery until you know how Gabapentin may affect you. You can treat your headache with acetaminophen or ibuprofen as per your doctor's consent. If headache and dizziness become severe, it may be a sign of something more serious. Contact your health care provider for evaluation.
Diarrhea and Constipation
According to the Mayo Clinic, you may experience diarrhea or constipation while taking Gabapentin. These effects may diminish over time as your body adjusts to your medication. You may be able to make dietary changes to help relieve gastrointestinal discomfort. To help combat diarrhea, eat a diet of bland foods with smaller meals spaced more frequently throughout the day. Severe diarrhea may lead to dehydration. Contact your health care provider if you experience prolonged severe diarrhea. Constipation may be relieved by eating a diet high in fiber, with ample fruits, vegetables and increased water consumption. An over-the-counter stool softener such as Colace may be helpful if dietary changes do not make a difference.
Blurred Vision and Memory Loss
Blurred vision and memory loss may occur while taking Gabapentin. These side effects may be dangerous while driving or completing daily activities. Use additional caution until you know how this medication will affect you. If these effects become troublesome and impact your daily lifestyle, contact your health care provider. He may consider changing your medication regimen.
