1. Pop a Pill
Some medications will correct retrograde ejaculation. Imipramine (an anti-depressant), chlorpheniramine (an antihistamine) and pseudoephedrine (a decongestant) are among the drugs commonly used to treat this condition. These drugs work by tightening up the bladder neck muscle and keeping it closed. When this muscle stays closed, sperm won't be ejaculated into the bladder during sex. However, these medications are not without side effects. Pseudoephedrine, for example, can raise blood pressure. Your doctor should get a full health history from you before prescribing any medication to treat retrograde ejaculation.
2. Get Off the Drugs
Some medications actually cause retrograde ejaculation. Certain anti-depressants and high blood pressure medications can cause the condition, as can some medications taken to treat enlargement of the prostate. These drugs interfere with the function of the bladder neck muscle, causing it to stay open and allowing semen to go into the bladder. If a drug you're taking causes retrograde ejaculation, your doctor may take you off of that drug or replace it with an alternative. Most cases of retrograde ejaculation caused by medications are reversed once you're no longer on the offending medication.
3. Go the Artificial Route
If you're suffering from retrograde ejaculation and trying to have a baby, you may have to consider artificial insemination, especially if your problem is caused by nerve damage or a physical abnormality. If you go for artificial insemination, your doctor will remove semen from your bladder and separate the sperm from the seminal fluid. The sperm may then be injected directly into your partner's uterus, combined with an egg from your partner outside the uterus or injected directly into one of your partner's eggs to produce instant fertilization. The method of artificial insemination that you'll use will be a decision you and your partner make with your doctor.
