3 Ways to Use Home Remedies for Pain

1. Relaxation and Meditation Bring Relief

Relaxation and meditation may provide pain relief for some. Sit quietly in an area in which you won't be disturbed. Close your eyes and picture something that makes you feel happy. Focus on this image while you breathing slowly in and out. Let your breath come all the way in, then exhale fully. Take deep breaths, but don't force them. Simply feel your breathing while concentrating on your happy image. As you focus and breathe, slowly relax the muscles in your body. If your focus wanders, just bring it back. Don't get upset or frustrated. Practice this technique once or twice each day. Plan to spend about 20 to 30 minutes practicing this technique. Eventually, you'll be able to call on the feelings of relaxation you get during these sessions whenever you want them.

2. Drink an Herbal Tea

Chamomile, peppermint, holy basil, Valerian and hops have properties that will relax your muscles, which may, in turn, relieve pain due to cramping. Chamomile tea is particularly helpful for menstrual cramps. Holy basil tea has an analgesic effect on the body, so you can try it for pain of all kinds. Valerian and hops will help you sleep, while peppermint is gently uplifting, producing a mild euphoria that might distract you from pain.

3. Use Ice and Heat Liberally

Ice reduces swelling and constricts blood vessels to create an analgesic effect, while heat relaxes muscles and increases blood flow to painful areas. Both ice and heat can be used as often as necessary. You can buy ice and heat packs from the drug store, or create your own versions at home. A bag of frozen peas works well as a makeshift ice pack, while a small pillowcase filled with rice and heated for 30 seconds in the microwave is good to use as a warm pack. Wrap ice packs in a towel before applying them to your skin, to avoid damaging your soft tissues. Never apply a pack that's hotter than comfortably warm to the touch.
