Drugs for Blood Pressure

Blood pressure refers to the force of blood that pushes against blood vessel walls. Sometimes this pressure can be high, and this is medically known as high blood pressure (hypertension). In some instances, the blood pressure can be low (hypotension). Fortunately, drugs exist that can normalize high or low blood pressures.

Ramipril

Ramipril, commonly sold as Altace, is an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor that is specifically designed to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. Additionally, ramipril can be taken to increase survival after a heart attack. Drugs.com says that its less concerning side effects include a headache, nausea, vomiting, trouble sleeping and impotence. In some instances, it can lead to a cough, dizziness and drowsiness. Some of ramipril's serious side effects include chest pain, a pounding heartbeat, fainting and lightheadedness. This medication is a tablet taken daily or as prescribed.

Olmesartan

Olmesartan, commonly sold as Azor or Benicar, is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist that treats high blood pressure. MedlinePlus says that this medication actually tightens the blood vessels so that blood flows easily through the vessels. Olmesartan's less concerning side effects include dizziness. Its serious side effects include trouble breathing or swallowing, hoarseness and swelling of the tongue, face, throat, ankles and lower legs. Notify a doctor when olmesartan leads to these effects. Olmesartan is a tablet taken once daily.

Midodrine

Midrodrine, commonly sold as Orvaten or ProAmatine, is a vasopressor medication used to manage low blood pressure (hypotension). Drugs.com says that midrodrine's less concerning effects include anxiety, nervousness, a feeling of pressure or fullness in the head and skin itching or tingling. In some instances, midrodrine leads to a dry mouth and increased urination. Midrodrine's serious side effects include chest pain, a fluttering feeling in the chest and an irregular heartbeat. Notify a physician when midrodrine causes these effects. Midrodrine is a tablet taken daily or as prescribed.
