The generically named norethindrone acetate/ethinyl drug, or estradiol, is marketed in the United States with the brand name Femhrt. It is a prescription-level medication used in the treatment of problems associated with menopause in women. Femhrt, for example, may be used to help relieve severe vasomotor symptoms--constriction of blood vessels---that are severe and to help prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. It is administered in pill form.

Rhinitis

The single most common and non-serious side effect found in a clinical study of Femhrt was rhinitis. This simply is the medical term for a runny nose. It occurs typically at the beginning of treatment with the drug and should not continue beyond the first several days of taking it.

Vaginal Bleeding

If you are postmenopausal, you already have stopped bleeding for your regular menstrual cycles in most cases. Taking Femhrt pills may make you bleed from the vagina again. This may be a steady flow or a few drops. Drugs.com calls this bleeding a non-serious side effect that is temporary in most women.

Hair Loss

Femhrt also may make some of your hair fall out at the start of treatment. This, in most women, is mild, but it can be worrisome. Tell your doctor if you lose a lot of hair or if your hair continues to fall out after the first week of taking Femhrt.

Pain

Pain can occur in your body when you take Femhrt. It may happen as headaches, or you may experience pain in your breasts. Both of these types of pain are mild in most women. Pain is classified as a non-serious side effect of Femhrt and should be temporary. Not all women who take Femhrt get all side effects or even any.

Diarrhea and Nausea

Femhrt commonly causes loose stools and diarrhea when you begin therapy with it. Diarrhea may be accompanied by abdominal cramping. The drug also may make you queasy or nauseous and you may vomit during the first several days of ingesting it. You also may feel bloated or full without eating when taking the drug. None of these are serious side effects and should pass on their own.
