If you have a hard time controlling your acne breakouts, chances are you have tried some of the over-the-counter (OTC) products that claim to provide miraculous results. However, before running to the nearest drugstore, you may want to take a look in your medicine cabinet or pantry. The solution to your skin problems may be closer than you think. These homemade skin remedies are simple and affordable.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is not a new discovery when it comes to treating the skin. In fact, it has been used for centuries for treating burns as well as wounds. You may already have a bottle of tea tree oil in your medicine cabinet, but if not, it can be purchased for under $10 at most drugstores. Most people can tolerate using tea tree oil on their skin without diluting it, but for some it may be too strong. Do a patch test before using to treat your skin by placing a small amount of oil on a hidden area of skin, such as behind the ear to test for skin sensitivity. If you can't tolerate undiluted tea tree oil, it can be diluted with water. To treat your skin, soak up a small amount of tea tree oil in a cotton swab. Apply directly to your blemishes. Reapply each time you wash your face.
Oatmeal
If you have oily skin along with your breakouts, then an oatmeal mask may be the home remedy for you. The dryness of the oatmeal soaks up excess oil and helps dry up pimples. To make an oatmeal mask, just prepare the oatmeal as though you were going to eat it: mix warm water and oatmeal to make a paste. Apply this paste to your face after washing with a mild soap. Leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes or until dry. Rinse it off and apply an oil-free moisturizer if needed. This remedy can be used once or twice a day to control excess oil.
Lemon Juice
Lemon juice helps unclog pores and promotes skin elasticity. It also helps slough off the dead skin cells that often cause acne. In addition to these benefits, it combats bacteria, which is a contributing factor to acne. To use this remedy, soak up a small amount of lemon juice in a cotton ball and apply to clean skin. If undiluted lemon juice is too strong for your skin, it can be diluted with water. Reapply each time you wash your face to receive the full benefits of this remedy.
