Unlike muscles in the rest of your body, most facial muscles do not attach directly to bone, according to the Nemours Foundation. Instead, they attach directly under the skin, enabling you to pull them just slightly to produce different facial expressions. Exercises for the face aim to increase blood circulation and improve muscle tone, giving your facial muscles a workout that will help to keep your face look more youthful and wrinkle free.
Eyes
Sit in a relaxing position and close your eyes. Look as far down as you can, then as far up as you can, all while keeping your eyes closed. Remember not to move or tense your neck, only move your eyes. Repeat 10 to 15 times.
Another eye exercise to try is lifting your eyebrows as far up as you can while stretching your eyelids down at the same time (keep your eyes closed throughout). Keep the stretched position for about 10 seconds, then relax. Repeat 10 to 15 times.
Chin
To work on a double chin (or to prevent one in the first place), sit in a chair and tilt your head so that you're looking up at the ceiling. Count to 20, keeping your lips closed and in an "O" shape (as if you're about to give someone a kiss), then bring your head back and relax.
For a variation, move your tilted head to the right over your right shoulder, hold for a few seconds, then slowly move it over the left shoulder, hold for a few seconds and return to the starting position.
Mouth and Lips
Say "oo," "ah" and "ee," stretching the lips as much as you can each time you make one of these sounds. To get the tongue involved--it too is a muscle--roll it around and all over your mouth while keeping the mouth wide open. Repeat both of these exercises 10 times each.
Forehead
To stretch your forehead, place both of your index fingers just above the eyebrows. Use the fingers to pull the eyebrows down while at the same time raising the eyebrows with your forehead muscles. Repeat 10 times.
