Laryngitis is the inflammation of the larynx, commonly known as the voice box, that results in hoarseness or voice loss. Laryngitis is typically caused by overuse, irritation or inflammation of the larynx, larynx membranes or vocal cords. The onset of laryngitis can occur very quickly, but there are steps you can take to treat voice loss.

Add Moisture

Breathing in moist air helps to reduce inflammation the larynx. Use a humidifier to add moisture to your home or breathe in steam from a bowl of hot water. You should also drink plenty of fluids to keep the larynx moist. Warm liquids such as tea or soup are helpful. Avoid caffeine, alcohol and even some juices because the acid can cause further irritation. Using lozenges and gargling with warm salt water can help to treat inflammation as well.

Rest Your Voice

Rest your voice as much as possible to allow the larynx membranes to repair themselves. Speak only when necessary and avoid whispering because it puts additional stress on the larynx. If it is necessary for you to speak to a group or do a presentation, try to use a microphone to help amplify your voice.

Medications

Medications are typically not used for laryngitis unless the cause is identified. For instance, if your laryngitis is being caused by a bacterial infection, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics. He may recommend antihistamines if your laryngitis is caused by allergies. Avoid taking decongestants because they can dry out your throat and cause additional damage.
