Being completely relaxed can be characterized by feelings of calmness, slow breathing and improved concentration. If you are experiencing the negative symptoms of stress, then applying some relaxation techniques to your everyday life may help you achieve a greater balance to your day. Even if you are short on time, many relaxation techniques can be performed for even a short time and at any location.

Practice Deep Breathing

While some think of relaxation as being "lazy," relaxation actually involves the conscious response and practice of working toward relaxation, according to HelpGuide.org. One way to get there is through practicing deep breathing.
While seated, keep your back straight and place your right hand on your chest and your left hand on your stomach. Breathe in deeply via your mouth and focus on the expansion of your stomach as you do so. Then, exhale strongly as you feel the chest start to rise. While it's not necessary to keep your hands on your chest and stomach throughout the entire deep breathing session, you can repeat as many breaths as you like.

Visualize a Peaceful Setting

Imagination can do wonderful things to relax your body. The visualization technique involves you closing your eyes and then imagining a place you find relaxing. This can be at the beach, on a favorite hiking trail or any other calming location.
After you picture that place in your head, think about the other senses involved. What does the air smell like? How do the air, water, leaves or other surroundings feel when you touch them? The more you are able to put yourself into this scenario, the more relaxed you will feel.

Do Something You Love

Many times in life, you have to do a job you don't want to do. This can add stress, tension and anxiety to your day. To relax, Rush University Medical Center recommends you choose an activity you love or feel rewarded for doing. This includes volunteering at a local organization of your choice.
Simple activities, such as calling an old friend, reading a magazine or watching a favorite television program can bring relaxation to an otherwise hectic day. While doing so, create a soothing atmosphere by lighting candles, dimming lights, playing soft music or resting in a comfortable chair. You may even want to take a warm bath using aromatherapy to sooth your nerves.
