Skin irritation can occur from insect bites, skin conditions such as eczema, rashes or allergic reactions. Many people turn to their local pharmacy for treatment of these skin irritations. However, there are many herbal remedies that may work just as well or better than a remedy picked up at the pharmacy. Having a little basic knowledge about herbal remedies can help you determine what the best treatment for you might be.

Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is an herbal treatment that is commonly used to relieve skin irritation. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, witch hazel cream is an excellent treatment to help relieve the itching caused by skin irritation. Witch hazel can be purchased at any pharmacy or retail store and is usually found with the bandages. This particular herbal remedy can be kept handy for easy usage, and a bottle can stay fresh and usable for years.

Jewelweed

Jewelweed is an herbal treatment that is commonly used to treat skin irritations like poison oak or poison ivy. The website for the University of Michigan Health System reports that jewelweed is the most popular herbal treatment for the problem of poison oak and poison ivy outbreaks. It is believed that rubbing jewelweed on the exposed skin within 15 minutes of exposure can prevent the rash from erupting. To do this you can crush a few of the leaves or stems of the plant and apply the fluid to the affected area. You can also put the leaves in water for soaking and then apply the water to the affected area, but this may take longer than simply crushing the leaves. Although there is little research to support these beliefs, many people still claim this remedy gives them relief.

Peppermint

Peppermint is an herb that most people think of as having a cool, refreshing feeling. Because peppermint has a cooling effect, it can be used on the skin when irritations occur. According to the University of Michigan Health System, peppermint oil can be used topically to relieve burning or itching on the skin. Peppermint essential oil can be purchased from your local health food store. However, if you like to grow peppermint plant as an herb in your garden, you can simply pick a piece of the plant and crush it to get the essential oils that provide this benefit.
