Basketball practice is important in order to improve your skills and fundamentals, but sometimes it can get boring and repetitive. Instead of doing the same old drills and practice methods, try some games that also act as drills that will help players have fun while also learning the skills they'll need to succeed on the basketball court.

Knockout

Knockout is an excellent drill game that teaches players how to shoot free throws under pressure as well as rebound and put-back shots. To play knockout, have all team members form a line beginning at the free throw line extending back toward half court. You will need two basketballs for this drill. The first player in line shoots a free throw. As soon as the ball is released by the player, the next player in line has a ball and tries to make a free throw before the other player makes his shot. If the first player misses, he may rebound his miss and try to put the ball back from anywhere on the court. If the second player makes his shot before the first player, the first player is "knocked out." The object of the game is to be the last player left on the court without being knocked out.

Cutthroat 21

This drill game teaches players how to play sound man-to-man defense and rebound against multiple players, as well as shoot free throws. One player has the ball as the offensive player, and the two other players act as defensive players. The offensive player tries to make a basket from anywhere on the floor while guarded by one or both players. The extra defensive player may choose to play off the player with the ball and focus on getting in good rebounding position. If the offensive player makes a shot, he shoots up to three free throws. On any miss, all players may rebound the ball. The player who rebounds the ball then becomes the offensive player and the remaining players are on defense. Players attempt to score, with shots behind the three-point line counting as two points and inside counting as one point. Free throws also count as one point. Play continues until one player gets to 21 points.

Ball Scramble

The ball scramble is a kind of musical chairs for basketball. Each player has a ball and stands around the half-court circle. Upon the coach's whistle, all players drop their basketballs and run to the end line. While players are running, the coach removes one ball. Players run back from the baseline and try to secure a ball. The player who does not have a ball is out. Play continues until only one ball is left. This drill game teaches aggressive pursuit of loose balls and diving on the floor to retrieve them.
