The Master Cleanse is a diet cleansing program created by Stanley Burroughs. In 1976, Burroughs published his recipe, which claims to cleanse the body by consuming nothing but maple syrup, water and lemon juice for an extended period of time. According to Jocelyn Voo of Fitnessmagazine.com, Burroughs was charged with practicing medicine without a license and involuntary manslaughter when a man who was following the Master Cleanse died under his care. Follow the Master Cleanse diet only at your own risk and under the strict supervision of a doctor.

Step 1

Eat only fresh fruits and vegetables for three days before beginning the diet. Two days before starting the diet, eat nothing but fresh fruit, vegetable juices and vegetable broths. One day before starting the diet, drink nothing but orange juice.

Step 2

Make the lemonade mixture. Mix 2 tbsp. rich maple syrup, 2 tbsp. fresh-squeezed lemon juice, 1/10 tsp. of cayenne pepper and 8 ounces of water in a tall glass, then chill.

Step 3

Drink the lemonade mixture throughout the day to curb hunger. Make more of the lemonade mixture as needed. You can drink as much of the lemonade as you want.

Step 4

Drink only the lemonade mixture and water every day until you feel that your body is cleansed. This may take at least 10 days, says Burroughs in his book, "The Master Cleanser."

Step 5

Drink only fresh orange juice the first day after completing the detox to ease back into your normal daily diet. Eat only broths and fruit and vegetable juices the second day, and eat only fresh fruits and vegetables on the third day.
