1. Use Herbs for Ear-Infection Symptoms
Herbal eardrops can destroy bacteria or fungus in the ear canal. Herbs also can relieve pain. If you decide to use herbal eardrops, look for a preparation containing mullein, garlic and St. John's Wort. One study found that these three ingredients were just as effective as prescription drops. Mullein helps to reduce congestion and inflammation. It has pain-relieving properties and is antiseptic and antibacterial. Garlic is antibacterial and antiviral. St. John's Wort may sooth your child and is also antibacterial and antiviral. Also consider giving your child Echinacea to help boost his immune system. Echinacea is taken internally, and you should find a formula made specifically made for children.
2. Try the Hot Water Method
Place a towel over your child's head, and have her sit with her head over a bowl of steaming water. The water should contain essential oils, such as eucalyptus. This steam treatment can relieve congestion caused by the ear infection. This isn't a good choice for a small child since there is some risk of burns if very hot water is used. Use this method with older children and take precautions to avoid burns.
3. Homeopathy for Chronic Ear Infections
Homeopathy can be used for acute symptoms, but is more appropriate if your child experiences chronic ear infections. Homeopathic remedies are sold at most health food stores. While there may be evidence that homeopathic remedies are effective, they are not approved or regulated by the FDA. You may have more success with homeopathy if you and your child consult with a homeopath. Be prepared to give homeopathy a few months before noticing any significant results. Pulsatilla is a homeopathic remedy often used for ear infections. It is indicated when symptoms improve with fresh air. Children who need pulsatilla often cry easily and require frequent consolation. If your child gets ear infections when teething, chamomilla might be the right remedy. You can try belladonna if your child is flushed, has fever and is in excessive pain, but if the symptoms are severe, seek traditional medical help.
