Age spots, also referred to as sun spots or liver spots, are flattened blemishes with a gray or brown color. They can occur anywhere on your body that has been exposed to the sun, when ultraviolet rays prompt an overproduction of pigment. Although dermatological treatments are available, you can also use an over-the-counter lotion to get rid of age spots on your legs.

Step 1

Purchase a lightening lotion that contains hydroquinone, glycolic acid or kojic acid, which are the active ingredients recommended by the Mayo Clinic.

Step 2

Cleanse your legs with mild soap and warm water. Towel dry.

Step 3

Apply a thin layer of the lotion twice a day onto the spots. Allow it to absorb into your skin before dressing or applying other skincare products. Since the lotion needs to penetrate the top surface of your skin, it might take a few months for the age spots to fade.

Step 4

Wear sunblock with SPF 30 or higher. Since the lotion can make your skin sensitive to the sun, apply sunblock whenever your legs will be exposed to sun. Sunblock can also prevent the age spot from worsening.
