Punching bags are widely used by boxers and martial artists. These fighters use punching bags to improve the power and accuracy of their strikes and kicks. Some boxers and martial artists use a variety of bags to make them well-rounded fighters. Some of the most common punching bags seen in boxing gyms and martial arts studios are the hanging heavy bag, standing heavy bag, grappling dummy and speed bag.

Hanging Heavy Bag

A hanging heavy bag usually weighs 40 to 100 lbs. and hangs from the ceiling via a chain. It is typically covered in leather or vinyl. The hanging heavy bag can give fighters a strenuous workout for several minutes or rounds. Boxers and martial artists can deliver continuous, powerful blows to the bag. Fighters can also work on their footwork with the bag because it often sways when it is hit. The hanging heavy bag is particularly beneficial for building punching strength because it forces the muscles of the body to work together to deliver a good wallop. Wearing hand and wrist wraps is recommended to avoid injuries when punching the bag.

Standing Heavy Bag

The standing heavy bag has become a popular piece of training equipment during the past couple of decades. It is similar to a hanging heavy bag except that it does not hang from the ceiling. The standing heavy bag is supported by a large base that is filled with water or sand. The standing heavy bag is more portable than the hanging version and it is easier to set up. Once the base is filled, the standing heavy bag can weigh over 200 lbs. Many standing heavy bags also allow you to adjust them to your height. However, the standing heavy bag does not swing so it does not allow you to practice on a moving target.

Grappling Dummy

Mixed martial arts are immensely popular. There are many grapplers looking for ways to improve their ground-fighting game. The grappling dummy was developed to give these fighters a practical piece or training equipment. These punching bags can range from about 50 to 130 lbs. and they are covered in vinyl. They are similar in shape to a person's torso. Mixed martial artists can lie the bag down and practice punches, elbow strikes and knee kicks while on the ground with the bag. Fighters can also simulate takedowns by picking up the bag and throwing it to the ground.

Speed Bag

Anyone who has ever been into a boxing gym or seen a "Rocky" movie has seen a speed bag. The speed bag is a small, lightweight piece or training equipment that is attached to a platform on the ceiling. It is filled with air and rapidly bounces off the ceiling platform when hit. The speed bag helps boxers develop accuracy, timing and quickness in their punches. The speed bag requires more skill than other styles of punching bags. It takes a lot of time and practice to develop the correct rhythm for hitting the speed bag.
