Ibandronate belongs to a class of medication known as bisphosphonates, which act by decreasing bone loss. It is a potent medication used to prevent and treat osteoporosis in post-menopausal women. According to Medline Plus, side effects from ibandronate use can include stomach upset, pain, dizziness, dental problems, urinary problems, constitutional symptoms and some potentially serious side effects. Knowing how to properly take this medication may reduce the risk of some of these side effects.
Gastrointestinal Problems
Though Ibandronate is generally well-tolerated, it can cause common side effects including diarrhea, nausea, constipation and stomach pain. Rarely, use of Ibandronate can result in ulcers in your stomach or esophagus. Use of Aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) may increase the risk of stomach irritation including ulcers.
To prevent stomach upset and erosions to the esophagus, MedicineNet suggests that it should be taken on an empty stomach in the morning with a full glass of plain water. Do not break the tablets. Do not eat, drink, take other medication (including vitamins), or lie down for at least 60 minutes after taking this medication.
Dizziness
Ibandronate may cause dizziness, which can be worsened by consuming alcohol or certain medicines. It should be used with caution. Do not drive or perform other potentially unsafe tasks until you are aware of how you will react to it.
Dental problems
Ibandronate can cause serious problems with your jaw, particularly if you undergo a dental procedure while taking this medication. To reduce this risk, visit your dentist and have him perform any necessary treatments prior to taking this medication. Proper dental care, including adequate brushing and flossing, should be maintained while taking this medication along with regular visits to your dentist.
Pain
Ibandronate can potentially cause severe bone, muscle or joint pain. This pain can occur within days, weeks or after years of use. It may subside when this medication is discontinued. Contact your doctor right away if you experience any type of pain while taking this medication.
Constitutional Symptoms
Ibandronate use can result in symptoms of infection including fever, sore throat, chills, cough and other signs of infection. Talk to your doctor if these symptoms are severe or do not go away.
Urinary Symptoms
While taking Ibandronate, some patients experience symptoms of frequent or painful urination. Tell your doctor if you experience these type of symptoms.
Potentially Serious Side Effects
Some of the side effects of Ibandronate can be potentially serious. Call your doctor immediately if you experience any of these: upper chest pain, pain on swallowing, difficulty swallowing, new or worsening heartburn, rash, painful or swollen gums, loosening of the teeth, or numbness in the jaw.
