An abscess is a localized collection of pus surrounded by swollen tissue. Abscesses can occur anywhere in the body and are caused by an infection. When the body attempts to fight off the infection, it "corners" the bacteria and foreign bodies in a central location, creating an abscess. Proper treatment of an abscess under the direction of your doctor is important to prevent further infection.

Antibiotics

Although an abscess can occur anywhere in the body, once it's fully formed, your doctor typically prescribes some type of antibiotic to treat the infection that's causing it. Though you may take other steps to reduce the inflammation or discomfort, antibiotics are generally required to get rid of the infection. Take the recommended dosage of antibiotics until the full prescription is gone, even if you start to feel better.

Drainage

Once an abscess forms, it's generally necessary for it to be drained. Do not attempt to drain an abscess at home on your own; you risk spreading the infection or causing further inflammation. Your doctor typically cuts or pierces the abscess and removes the pus with a needle.

Warm Pressure

Your doctor may suggest applying warm pressure to reduce inflammation and discomfort. To make a warm compress, saturate a clean towel with warm, not hot, water. Apply the towel to the abscess until the pain or discomfort subsides, or until the towel cools off. Repeat as often as necessary.
