Whether you are a Major League Baseball hopeful or a weekend warrior, all baseball and softball players must learn how to hold the bat properly. Holding the bat correctly allows for increases in the number and distance of hits. There are slight differences when holding a wooden versus an aluminum bat. An aluminum bats have a rubber grip at the bottom while wooden bats do not. Because of this, a batter's hands will be exposed to the wooden bat, potentially causing splinters. If this is a concern, then wear baseball gloves when using a wooden bat.

Step 1

Pick up the baseball bat and use your fingers to hold it at the narrowest part of the bat. If you are right-handed, place your left hand on the very bottom of the bat, with the right hand on top. If you are left-handed, place your right hand on the very bottom of the bat, with the left hand on top.

Step 2

Rotate your wrists until your knuckles are lined up.

Step 3

Keep your fingers loose and relaxed. This helps to maintain a more natural swing.
