Basketball shooting games, as well as being fun, are a great way to practice shooting the basketball. There is a variety of games that can be played with any number of players. These games are typically informal and played without the presence of referees. There are games that are played in an every-man-for-himself fashion and others that are played with teams. The rules of these games can vary depending on geography.

H-O-R-S-E

In this game players take turns shooting the ball from a location of their choice. When a player makes a shot, another must shoot the ball from the same spot. If the shot is missed, one letter from the word "horse" is assigned to the player, and the next person must attempt the shot until someone makes it or it becomes the original shooters turn again. If a player makes the shot, then it is his turn to pick the shot the others must make. This is repeated until all but one player is eliminated. A player is eliminated when he collects all the letters that spell horse. The last player left is the winner.

Around the World

This is a game for two or more players. In this game, players take shots from set positions around the perimeter of the painted area near the basket, known as the key. Play begins at on end of the key at the position marker nearest the baseline. When a player makes a shot, he advances to the next position marker until he reaches the one opposite the start position. Now the player repeats the above steps in the moving in the other direction, until he is back at the start position. To win the game, after fully moving around the key, the player must make a shot from the center of the three-point line. The first to successfully complete the entire spectrum of shots is the winner.

21 basketball

The game of 21 is played by three or more players. Each player takes a shot at the basket, and the first one who makes it gets possession first. The game is like every-man-for-himself basketball, or one-on-one-on-one, if you will. The scoring is by twos, with the exception of three-point baskets. All other basketball rules apply to 21, such as dribbling, traveling and fouls. The first player to reach 21 wins as long as he is ahead of the next player by at least two points. If he is not, play continues until someone wins by at least two points.
