Ear wax is a form of oil that collects in the outer ear. It is produced by glands in the outer ear. Its purpose is to collect dust, bugs and various other particles from entering the inner ear canal and reaching the ear drum, as they could puncture the ear drum and cause pain and hearing problems.
Oil
Placing baby oil, mineral oil, or olive oil in the ear allows the ear wax to be softened and loosened for later removal. The oil is usually placed into the ear with an eyedropper. The oil also lubricates the ear canal for safe cleaning. This process of ear wax softening is usually done over a period of five to six days.
Bulb Syringe and Water
With a bulb syringe place a small amount of water into the ear canal. Then remove the water with the bulb syringe as well. The water should be close to body temperature. It is important to have the water at an accurate temperature to avoid pain in the ears, nausea and dizziness. The ear wax, previously loosened and softened by the oil, should come out easily using water and the bulb syringe.
Rubbing Alcohol
Rubbing alcohol has fast-drying properties. The rubbing alcohol is to ensure that the ear canal is properly dried form the water. By placing a small amount of rubbing alcohol into the ear and moving the head around the alcohol thoroughly coats the canal. The alcohol will dry rapidly after this is done.
